Culturally Appropriate Advocacy Pilot (CAAP)

The reform of the Mental Health Act -white paper responds to the findings of the 2018 independent review of the Act.

As a result, it suggests that Black Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities have been disproportionately recognised and under-represented within secondary mental health care provision.

The pilot will be delivered from 8^th November 2021 till 31^st March 2022. We intend to run group Advocacy sessions in hospitals and community settings in Manchester to look at the experiences of BAME communities that are subject to the Mental Health Act 1983. Increased say in care and treatment during detention under the MHA
Greater satisfaction with care and treatment during detention under the MHA
Increased propensity for self-advocacy and peer advocacy
Increased access to culturally appropriate IMHA and other forms of advocacy
